Matthew 5:1-10 and Psalm 124

Matthew 5:1-10

[1]When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. [2]Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:

[3]"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

[4]"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

[5]"Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

[6]"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

[7]"Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.

[8]"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

[9]"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.

[10]"Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Psalm 124

[1]   If it had not been the LORD who was on our side
          -- let Israel now say --
[2]   if it had not been the LORD who was on our side,
          when our enemies attacked us,
[3]   then they would have swallowed us up alive,
          when their anger was kindled against us;
[4]   then the flood would have swept us away,
          the torrent would have gone over us;
[5]   then over us would have gone
          the raging waters.

[6]   Blessed be the LORD,
          who has not given us
          as prey to their teeth.
[7]   We have escaped like a bird
          from the snare of the fowlers;
     the snare is broken,
          and we have escaped.

[8]   Our help is in the name of the LORD,
          who made heaven and earth.
