Hebrews 12:3-11 and Psalm 148

Hebrews 12:3-11

[3]Consider him who endured such hostility against himself from sinners, so that you may not grow weary or lose heart. [4]In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. [5]And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as children — "My child, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, or lose heart when you are punished by him; [6]for the Lord disciplines those whom he loves, and chastises every child whom he accepts." [7]Endure trials for the sake of discipline. God is treating you as children; for what child is there whom a parent does not discipline? [8]If you do not have that discipline in which all children share, then you are illegitimate and not his children. [9]Moreover, we had human parents to discipline us, and we respected them. Should we not be even more willing to be subject to the Father of spirits and live? [10]For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share his holiness. [11]Now, discipline always seems painful rather than pleasant at the time, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

Psalm 148

[1]   Praise the Lord!
     Praise the Lord from the heavens;
          praise him in the heights!
[2]   Praise him, all his angels;
          praise him, all his host!

[3]   Praise him, sun and moon;
          praise him, all you shining stars!
[4]   Praise him, you highest heavens,
          and you waters above the heavens!

[5]   Let them praise the name of the Lord,
          for he commanded and they were created.
[6]   He established them forever and ever;
          he fixed their bounds, which cannot be passed.

[7]   Praise the Lord from the earth,
          you sea monsters and all deeps,
[8]   fire and hail, snow and frost,
          stormy wind fulfilling his command!

[9]   Mountains and all hills,
          fruit trees and all cedars!
[10]  Wild animals and all cattle,
          creeping things and flying birds!

[11]  Kings of the earth and all peoples,
          princes and all rulers of the earth!
[12]  Young men and women alike,
          old and young together!

[13]  Let them praise the name of the Lord,
          for his name alone is exalted;
          his glory is above earth and heaven.
[14]  He has raised up a horn for his people,
          praise for all his faithful,
          for the people of Israel who are close to him.
     Praise the Lord!
