Luke 7:1-17

[1]After Jesus had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he
entered Capernaum. [2]A centurion there had a slave whom he valued highly, and
who was ill and close to death. [3]When he heard about Jesus, he sent some
Jewish elders to him, asking him to come and heal his slave. [4]When they came
to Jesus, they appealed to him earnestly, saying, "He is worthy of having you
do this for him, [5]for he loves our people, and it is he who built our
synagogue for us." [6]And Jesus went with them, but when he was not far from
the house, the centurion sent friends to say to him, "Lord, do not trouble
yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; [7]therefore I
did not presume to come to you. But only speak the word, and let my servant be
healed. [8]For I also am a man set under authority, with soldiers under me;
and I say to one, 'Go,' and he goes, and to another, 'Come,' and he comes, and
to my slave, 'Do this,' and the slave does it." [9]When Jesus heard this he
was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd that followed him, he said, "I
tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith." [10]When those who had
been sent returned to the house, they found the slave in good health.

[11]Soon afterwards he went to a town called Nain, and his disciples and a
large crowd went with him. [12]As he approached the gate of the town, a man
who had died was being carried out. He was his mother's only son, and she was
a widow; and with her was a large crowd from the town. [13]When the Lord saw
her, he had compassion for her and said to her, "Do not weep." [14]Then he
came forward and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said,
"Young man, I say to you, rise!" [15]The dead man sat up and began to speak,
and Jesus gave him to his mother. [16]Fear seized all of them; and they
glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has risen among us!" and "God has
looked favorably on his people!" [17]This word about him spread throughout
Judea and all the surrounding country.

Luke 6:39-49

[39]He also told them a parable: "Can a blind person guide a blind person? Will not both fall into a pit? [40]A disciple is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully qualified will be like the teacher. [41]Why do you see the speck in your neighbor's eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye? [42]Or how can you say to your neighbor, 'Friend, let me take out the speck in your eye,' when you yourself do not see the log in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbor's eye.

[43]"No good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit; [44]for each tree is known by its own fruit. Figs are not gathered from thorns, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. [45]The good person out of the good treasure of the heart produces good, and the evil person out of evil treasure produces evil; for it is out of the abundance of the heart that the mouth speaks.

[46]"Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I tell you? [47]I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them. [48]That one is like a man building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock; when a flood arose, the river burst against that house but could not shake it, because it had been well built. [49]But the one who hears and does not act is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against it, immediately it fell, and great was the ruin of that house."

Psalm 103

[1]   Bless the LORD, O my soul,
         and all that is within me,
         bless his holy name.
[2]   Bless the LORD, O my soul,
         and do not forget all his benefits --
[3]   who forgives all your iniquity,
         who heals all your diseases,
[4]   who redeems your life from the Pit,
         who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy,
[5]   who satisfies you with good as long as you live
         so that your youth is renewed like the eagle's.

[6]   The LORD works vindication
         and justice for all who are oppressed.
[7]   He made known his ways to Moses,
         his acts to the people of Israel.
[8]   The LORD is merciful and gracious,
         slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
[9]   He will not always accuse,
         nor will he keep his anger for ever.
[10]  He does not deal with us according to our sins,
         nor repay us according to our iniquities.
[11]  For as the heavens are high above the earth,
         so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
[12]  as far as the east is from the west,
         so far he removes our transgressions from us.
[13]  As a father has compassion for his children,
         so the LORD has compassion for those who fear him.
[14]  For he knows how we were made;
         he remembers that we are dust.

[15]  As for mortals, their days are like grass;
         they flourish like a flower of the field;
[16]  for the wind passes over it, and it is gone,
         and its place knows it no more.
[17]  But the steadfast love of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting
         on those who fear him,
         and his righteousness to children's children,
[18]  to those who keep his covenant
         and remember to do his commandments.

[19]  The LORD has established his throne in the heavens,
         and his kingdom rules over all.
[20]  Bless the LORD, O you his angels,
         you mighty ones who do his bidding,
         obedient to his spoken word.
[21]  Bless the LORD, all his hosts,
         his ministers that do his will.
[22]  Bless the LORD, all his works,
         in all places of his dominion.
    Bless the LORD, O my soul.

Psalm 25

[1]   To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul.
[2]   O my God, in you I trust;
         do not let me be put to shame;
         do not let my enemies exult over me.
[3]   Do not let those who wait for you be put to shame;
         let them be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.

[4]   Make me to know your ways, O LORD;
         teach me your paths.
[5]   Lead me in your truth, and teach me,
         for you are the God of my salvation;
         for you I wait all day long.

[6]   Be mindful of your mercy, O LORD, and of your steadfast love,
         for they have been from of old.
[7]   Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions;
         according to your steadfast love remember me,
         for your goodness' sake, O LORD!

[8]   Good and upright is the LORD;
         therefore he instructs sinners in the way.
[9]   He leads the humble in what is right,
         and teaches the humble his way.
[10]  All the paths of the LORD are steadfast love and faithfulness,
         for those who keep his covenant and his decrees.

[11]  For your name's sake, O LORD,
         pardon my guilt, for it is great.

[12]  Who are they that fear the LORD?
         He will teach them the way that they should choose

[13]  They will abide in prosperity,
         and their children shall possess the land.
[14]  The friendship of the LORD is for those who fear him,
         and he makes his covenant known to them.
[15]  My eyes are ever toward the LORD,
         for he will pluck my feet out of the net.

[16]  Turn to me and be gracious to me,
         for I am lonely and afflicted.
[17]  Relieve the troubles of my heart,
         and bring me out of my distress.
[18]  Consider my affliction and my trouble,
         and forgive all my sins.

[19]  Consider how many are my foes,
         and with what violent hatred they hate me.
[20]  O guard my life, and deliver me;
         do not let me be put to shame, for I take refuge in you.
[21]  May integrity and uprightness preserve me,
         for I wait for you.

[22]  Redeem Israel, O God,
         out of all its troubles.

Luke 6:1-11

[1]One sabbath while Jesus was going through the grainfields, his disciples plucked some heads of grain, rubbed them in their hands, and ate them. [2]But some of the Pharisees said, "Why are you doing what is not lawful on the sabbath?" [3]Jesus answered, "Have you not read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? [4]He entered the house of God and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and gave some to his companions?" [5]Then he said to them, "The Son of Man is lord of the sabbath."

[6]On another sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught, and there was a man there whose right hand was withered. [7]The scribes and the Pharisees watched him to see whether he would cure on the sabbath, so that they might find an accusation against him. [8]Even though he knew what they were thinking, he said to the man who had the withered hand, "Come and stand here." He got up and stood there. [9]Then Jesus said to them, "I ask you, is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the sabbath, to save life or to destroy it?" [10]After looking around at all of them, he said to him, "Stretch out your hand." He did so, and his hand was restored. [11]But they were filled with fury and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.

Hosea 2:16-23

[16]On that day, says the LORD, you will call me, "My husband," and no longer will you call me, "My Baal." [17]For I will remove the names of the Baals from her mouth, and they shall be mentioned by name no more. [18]I will make for you a covenant on that day with the wild animals, the birds of the air, and the creeping things of the ground; and I will abolish the bow, the sword, and war from the land; and I will make you lie down in safety. [19]And I will take you for my wife forever; I will take you for my wife in righteousness and in justice, in steadfast love, and in mercy. [20]I will take you for my wife in faithfulness; and you shall know the LORD. [21]On that day I will answer, says the LORD, I will answer the heavens and they shall answer the earth; [22]and the earth shall answer the grain, the wine, and the oil, and they shall answer Jezreel; [23]and I will sow him for myself in the land. And I will have pity on Lo-ruhamah, and I will say to Lo-ammi, "You are my people"; and he shall say, "You are my God."

Psalm 62

[1]   For God alone my soul waits in silence;
         from him comes my salvation.
[2]   He alone is my rock and my salvation,
         my fortress; I shall never be shaken.

[3]   How long will you assail a person,
         will you batter your victim, all of you,
         as you would a leaning wall, a tottering fence?
[4]   Their only plan is to bring down a person of prominence.
         They take pleasure in falsehood;
    they bless with their mouths,
         but inwardly they curse.
Selah

[5]   For God alone my soul waits in silence,
         for my hope is from him.
[6]   He alone is my rock and my salvation,
         my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
[7]   On God rests my deliverance and my honor;
         my mighty rock, my refuge is in God.

[8]   Trust in him at all times, O people;
         pour out your heart before him;
         God is a refuge for us.
     Selah

[9]   Those of low estate are but a breath,
         those of high estate are a delusion;
    in the balances they go up;
         they are together lighter than a breath.
[10]  Put no confidence in extortion,
         and set no vain hopes on robbery;
         if riches increase, do not set your heart on them.

[11]  Once God has spoken;
         twice have I heard this:
    that power belongs to God,
[12]       and steadfast love belongs to you, O Lord.
    For you repay to all
         according to their work.
